Free Standing Heavy Bag

Free standing Heavy Bag Information

If you buy a free standing heavy bag, it may turn out to be the piece of equipment you end up using the most.

There are a few things that you may want to consider before purchasing. The first is size. For most people, the larger the bag, the better. Plus, with a larger free standing punch bag the base is larger too. And speaking of bases, some bags allow you to fill the base with either water or sand. If you opt for using water, then understand that water does tend to slosh around and if you happen to be hitting the bag in the direction the water happens to be sloshing then the bag can move. Of course you never know when that will happen so my recommendation is that you fill the base with sand instead. Sand seems to tend to give a more stable platform for the bag.

Free Standing Heavy Bag – Sand vs. Foam vs. Water

Even with sand in the base, the upper bag can tend to move and deflect and if you happen to catch a glancing blow then you may end up leaving a bit of your skin on the bag. Friction burns are pretty common with these types of strikes.

Most quality freestanding heavy bags are filled with high density foam. This type of foam can stand up to some really rough use. Depending on the training you want to achieve you may want to consider the diameter of the upper bag, the weight of the bag when filled with either water or sand and the over all height of the free standing bag itself.

Not all bags are made the same and the material covering the bag will take the most abuse so spending a little extra money for a bag with a higher quality material covering is money well spent.

No matter how heavy or what material you use to fill the base, the bag will move just a little bit with a really hard kick. It really shouldn’t be a problem but it’s something people who have never owned one before should know. Another thing is that if you kick them hard enough to tip up a little bit they will make a definite “thump” then hit the floor. If you happen to have your free standing heavy bag on the second floor of your residence, then the thump can be pretty darn loud downstairs. If that’s the case then you may want to opt for a padded mat under the base. That will help deaden the noise.

A free standing heavy bag can provide you with an excellent workout and for many people it’s their favorite way to get some cardio exercise too. Spending a little extra money for a higher quality free standing heavy bag in the beginning is generally the best way to go. And be sure you are taught how to throw punches and kicks before you really get into it. That can help you avoid injuries while using your free standing heavy bag.
